Skyrim begins with the player on a cart headed for execution. Before the axe can fall, a dragon attacks, the first seen in centuries, and the prisoner escapes into a land torn apart by civil war between the rebel Stormcloaks and the Imperial Legion.
The player soon learns they are Dragonborn, a mortal with the soul of a dragon who can absorb the power of slain dragons and use it to speak in the ancient dragon language. The main quest builds toward a confrontation with Alduin the World-Eater, but nothing stops you from ignoring it to join the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood or the College of Winterhold.
Skyrim's freedom is what made it a phenomenon. There are no fixed classes, so you improve the skills you actually use, whether that is archery, smithing, magic or sneaking. Dragon shouts, hundreds of quests and a huge hand-crafted world make it a game players return to for hundreds of hours.
