Black Ops II splits its story between two eras. In the 1980s, Alex Mason and Frank Woods fight through Cold War conflicts in Angola, Afghanistan and Nicaragua, where they first cross paths with Raul Menendez. In 2025, Mason's son David leads a special operations team as Menendez, now a revolutionary with millions of followers, takes control of the world's drone fleet.
Choices made along the way change how the campaign plays out, leading to multiple endings, and optional Strike Force missions let players command squads and drones to shape the outcome of the war.
Black Ops II introduced the Pick 10 create-a-class system and scorestreaks, both still loved by fans. Zombies expanded with the open TranZit map and later maps like Mob of the Dead and Origins, playable with up to four players.
