THE STORY

Resident Evil 6 is the most ambitious entry in the franchise, featuring four full campaigns that intersect and overlap across a global bioterror crisis. Leon S. Kennedy's campaign echoes classic survival horror as a zombie outbreak hits Tall Oaks, including a chilling sequence inside a cathedral. Chris Redfield's campaign plays like a military shooter as he leads his BSAA squad through urban warzones in China. Jake Muller, the son of Albert Wesker, is hunted by the relentless Ustanak while paired with Sherry Birkin. Ada Wong operates alone in a covert campaign that ties all three storylines together.

The global threat at the center of the story is the C-Virus, a devastating bioweapon engineered by Neo-Umbrella, a shadow organization that rose from the ashes of the original Umbrella Corporation. The bioterror attacks strike simultaneously across multiple continents, hitting Tall Oaks in the United States, the war-torn city of Edonia in Eastern Europe, and the densely populated Lanshiang in China. Each campaign follows its own timeline through these events, and the brilliance of the structure is that all four storylines weave in and out of each other. Characters cross paths at key moments, and players experience pivotal scenes from different perspectives depending on which campaign they are playing.

Resident Evil 6 pushed hard into action territory, moving further from the survival horror roots that defined the series than any previous entry. Critics were sharply divided. Many longtime fans felt the game abandoned what made Resident Evil special, trading tension and resource management for explosive set pieces and cooperative gunplay. Review scores reflected this divide, with Metacritic landing at 67 out of 100. Despite the backlash, RE6 became the best-selling Resident Evil game at the time, moving 15.2 million copies worldwide. The sheer volume of content, four full campaigns with cooperative support, an addictive Mercenaries mode, and Agent Hunt multiplayer, gave players hundreds of hours of gameplay even as purists pushed back on the direction.

The polarizing response to Resident Evil 6 forced Capcom to take a hard look at the franchise and rethink its direction entirely. The result was Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a dramatic return to survival horror that stripped away the action excess and delivered a first-person experience rooted in atmosphere, isolation, and dread. RE7 was both a critical and commercial success that revitalized the entire franchise and set the stage for Resident Evil Village. In hindsight, RE6 served as the turning point that pushed the series to its limits and ultimately brought it back to the foundation that fans had been asking for all along.

WHAT SETS IT APART

Mercenaries mode is the timed score attack featured in Infinity Arcade's weekly challenge. Players are dropped onto enclosed maps and tasked with chaining kills and combos against waves of enemies before the clock runs out. Every kill extends the timer, and skilled players can string together massive combo chains by keeping the pressure constant. It is one of the most replayable modes in the entire Resident Evil series, rewarding precision, map knowledge, and aggressive play.

Resident Evil 6 delivers more content than any other game in the franchise. Four full campaigns, each playable in cooperative mode, offer distinct tones and gameplay styles. Leon's campaign leans into horror, Chris brings military action, Jake offers a chase-driven experience with the Ustanak, and Ada's solo campaign connects every thread. Agent Hunt mode lets players invade other players' campaigns as enemies, adding an unpredictable layer of tension to every session. The crossover system means that during certain missions, two separate co-op duos can encounter each other in real time, creating four-player moments that emerge naturally from the intersecting storylines.

Resident Evil 6 stands as the most divisive game in the franchise. It is loved for its sheer ambition and the volume of content packed into a single release, and criticized for abandoning the survival horror identity that built the series. Despite mixed reviews and a Metacritic score of 67, it sold 15.2 million copies worldwide, proving massive commercial appeal even when critical reception was divided. The gap between review scores and sales numbers tells a story of a game that connected with a broad audience while alienating the core fanbase.

The reception of Resident Evil 6 became a catalyst for change at Capcom. The backlash forced the studio to rethink the franchise direction entirely, leading directly to the acclaimed Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village. Without RE6 pushing the action formula to its breaking point, the survival horror revival that followed may never have happened. It is a game that shaped the future of the franchise not through its own success, but through the response it generated.
