Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the explosive conclusion to the original Modern Warfare trilogy, picking up immediately after the events of Modern Warfare 2. The world is in chaos. A full-scale Russian invasion is sweeping across Europe and the United States, orchestrated by the ultranationalist terrorist Vladimir Makarov, one of the most ruthless villains in first-person shooter history.

Players step into the boots of multiple soldiers across a global conflict that spans New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Prague, and beyond. The campaign follows the remnants of Task Force 141, led by the iconic Captain John Price, alongside Yuri, a former ally of Makarov with a dark past that ties directly into the trilogy's overarching narrative. Together, they hunt Makarov across continents while the world burns around them.

The story weaves between large-scale military operations and covert black ops missions. Players experience the fall and liberation of major cities, uncover betrayals from within their own ranks, and witness the personal toll of war on soldiers who have been fighting since the events of the first Modern Warfare. The death of fan-favorite character Soap MacTavish midway through the campaign remains one of the most emotional moments in Call of Duty history.

The campaign builds to a climactic final confrontation in Dubai, where Captain Price corners Makarov in the Hotel Oasis. In a brutal hand-to-hand struggle, Price wraps a steel cable around Makarov's neck and sends him crashing through a glass ceiling to his death, finally ending the war that consumed three games and millions of lives. It is one of the most satisfying villain takedowns in gaming.

Modern Warfare 3 introduced Survival Mode, a wave-based cooperative experience where one or two players face increasingly difficult waves of enemies across multiplayer maps. Unlike Zombies mode in other Call of Duty titles, Survival Mode features realistic military enemies including juggernauts, attack helicopters, and chemical warfare units. Players earn cash between rounds to purchase weapons, equipment, and air support from armories placed around each map. It is the mode featured in Infinity Arcade's monthly high score challenge.

The multiplayer introduced the Pointstreaks system, replacing the traditional killstreak model. For the first time, objectives like capturing flags and planting bombs counted toward streak rewards, not just kills. This opened up the game to different playstyles and rewarded team-oriented players. New modes like Kill Confirmed (collect dog tags to score), Team Defender, and community favorites like Gun Game and Infected became instant staples.

Spec Ops returned with an expanded mission set featuring up to 48 stars of challenges across varied scenarios, from stealth infiltrations to full-on vehicle combat. The sheer volume of content across campaign, multiplayer, Spec Ops, and Survival Mode made MW3 one of the most complete packages in the franchise.

Modern Warfare 3 shattered entertainment records at launch. It generated $400 million in sales within its first 24 hours in North America and the United Kingdom alone, and crossed $1 billion in global revenue in just 16 days, making it the fastest-selling entertainment product in history at the time. With 26.5 million copies sold worldwide, it remains the highest-selling entry in the Call of Duty franchise.
